Social Media Intelligence (SOCMINT)

By Seme Research Team · Updated May 22, 2026

Definition

Social Media Intelligence (SOCMINT) is a specialized subset of OSINT focused on collecting and analyzing information from social media platforms. SOCMINT encompasses monitoring public posts, analyzing network connections, tracking behavioral patterns, extracting structured data from social profiles, and assessing sentiment and influence. Key platforms analyzed include Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Weibo, and TikTok. SOCMINT differs from general social media monitoring in its analytical depth — it goes beyond tracking mentions to map relationship networks, identify influence patterns, detect behavioral anomalies, and construct timeline narratives from social activity.

How It Works

SOCMINT collection operates at three levels. Level 1 — Profile Analysis: extracting structured data from public profiles (bio, location, employment, education, follower count, posting frequency). Level 2 — Network Mapping: analyzing follower/following relationships, mutual connections, interaction patterns (likes, replies, shares), and community membership to map social graphs. Level 3 — Content Analysis: applying NLP to post content for topic modeling, sentiment analysis, writing style fingerprinting, and entity extraction. Advanced SOCMINT tools also perform image analysis (reverse image search, EXIF data extraction) and temporal analysis (posting patterns, timezone inference, activity gaps).

Example

Analyzing a person's Twitter/X presence reveals: they interact primarily with AI researchers (topic affinity), are most active during US Pacific timezone hours (location inference), have a network of 2,000+ connections including 15 CTOs and 30 research scientists (influence mapping), and their writing style matches 3 anonymous blog posts about AI ethics (authorship attribution). Their LinkedIn shows 500+ professional connections concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area tech ecosystem.

Applications

  • Influence network mapping for public relations
  • Competitor talent intelligence and team analysis
  • Brand reputation monitoring and crisis detection
  • Political campaign supporter analysis and outreach
